MY project and YOUR goals


I recently wrote about creating and doing a Personal Growth project in 2018. There are a few reasons for that and the main one is that I’ve been passionate about positive psychology-related topics for around 16-17 years, have a degree in psychology, and yet I haven’t really ever shared this knowledge much and used it in practice.

My idea is to keep the plan for the project open and flexible during the year because while I’m learning new things I know that I will need to update and review it. At the moment I have two lists: one with goals and another one with productivity tips and techniques, and lots of notes 😉 I tried to simplify it as much as I can but at the same time I know that it will be a great challenge.


Thank you for your comments and feedback regarding my previous blog posts. I’ve received some great advice. I also read quite a lot of blogs to find out what people think about setting goals up (particularly for the New Year) and that was a VERY interesting experience. Fantastic to see a large diversity and variation in this topic:

  • Some bloggers don’t believe in New Year’s resolution at all. Looks like they think that the time when everyone feels a lot more motivated than usually won’t make the goals, for example, any more achievable. I partly agree. On the other hand, start of a new year feels like a nice special moment to start something new, work on changing old habits or creating some new ones.
  • Some of you believe that focusing on one new goal rather than a few is better because many aims and plans will make it difficult or impossible to achieve them
  • and then some of you have lists of goals varying from a few items on the list to around 20 or more.
  • There are people who focus very specifically on things which you can measure – e.g. reading 75 books, doing stretching every morning.
  • And there are people who concentrate more generally on positive traits and emotions, and are planning, for instance, to appreciate life more or worry less.

It would be great if you could add anything that you believe I’ve missed here (please comment below) or if you are willing to start a discussion about it below this blog post! 🙂

I don’t think that there are right and wrong answers about these personal development plans because everyone is different and something that is challenging for one person may be a lot easier for another.

The important thing is not what WE WANT but how we are going to achieve it:

  • Do you have any plan? Do you have a GOOD and SPECIFIC action plan?
  • Are you flexible in your approach and open to accept that you may need to change your strategy?
  • How much effort are you willing to put in chasing your dreams?

  1. Very nicely summarized!
    I have made monthly goals. Some won’t require much effort, others a bit more motivation. They are all measurable and realistic.
    I think those two are the main factors!

    People often say: “Losing weight”.
    How much? And by when do you want to reach that target? How?

    I don’t know if I will accomplish them all, but you I will be writing about it monthly 😀

      Exactly, I agree, the goals such as the ‘get healthier/exercise more’ need a specific detailed action plans what, where, when..

      I’m still thinking and havent made my opinion about being ‘realistic’ with your goals. On the one hand, it’s important and obvious. On the other hand, if Wright brothers or Einstein, or Edison, would think what was realistic in their times they probably hadnt achieved so much.

      You said you dont know if you can accomplish the goals. I get similar thoughts but one thing Ive learnt is that whenever we can we shld believe in ourselves a lot more and be a lot more confident with our goals. This will help when there are obstacles etc. But I also keep catching myself on thoughts such as “Hopefully I will..” “I hope I can do this.”! Im working on thinking differently about myself and my abilities. If you love something, if there is grit and passion, you definietly can achieve it! 🙂


    1. Hi, thank you for your comments. The action plans are quite large and I have some charts and lists prepared. I’ve written quite a lot of pages in my notebook and these contain also some thoughts, reminders etc. so it won’t be possible for me to answer to that in one comment but I’ll be sharing my ideas and action plans in my blog posts now and then. It is a work in progress. I’ve realised that such plan cannot be fixed and closed o n 1st January because: 1. once you try some techniques you may realise that actually in practice they dont really work for your goals that well as they should e.g. let’s say I want to do a chart that should help me to keep track on tasks that I should be doing on a regular basis. Then I realised that I need another more detailed chart too for some reasons. I thought I could have one chart/list for my goals but a few of them are complex. And 2. life is unpredictable so your techniques and action plans may need to change sometimes and there should be always some room for flexibility.

    1. I’ve learnt that setting goals and the right action plans are more than important BUT everyone is different so many someone doesnt need an action plan as most people do…? Anyway, goals are usually complex and have a few different aspects, require many tasks, actions to be taken and it makes it easier to accomplish our goals if we can track our progress, learn from our mistakes, see if we are productive enough or if we can improve it.

  2. This was really well summarized! I’ve noticed those trends, too, when it comes to making a new resolution. It really starts with a person’s mindset about making a goal and reaching it. Not everything is always possible, but it’s fun starting the new year with things we hope to accomplish. A lot can happen in one year. Great post!

    1. Thank you very much for this comment. That’s right. I also believe that mindset is the most important thing that contributes to achieving goals. Then later grit, consistency, passion, self-discipline are crucial too but you said it well – everything really starts with the right mindset! Have a good day! 🙂

  3. Thank you for sharing this very interesting post! Setting goals at the start of a new year can be a great way to keep track of progress but it can cause stress for some. There is no right or wrong answer at setting New Year’s Resolutions. I just personally have to set goals more frequently as my health either improves or declines. Living with a chronic illness creates difficult times at random moments and you must be flexible to new changes! I am looking forward to reading more of your posts because they seem very helpful and I can see the knowledge you have! I hope you will enjoy some of my other posts!     1. Hi Alyssa, thank you very much for this lovely comments. I’m sorry that you need deal with the chronic disease. I have a bit of a similar problem but my condition doesnt affect me much in a way that I can’t work or write, or read most of the time. Personal development and enjoying my passions is very important to me but family is one of my biggest priorities. I’m going to have my second baby in March (only 10 weeks left!!!) and I know I’ll need more flexible approach. I think actually it’s important for everyone to be able to accept that life is unpredictable and changes a lot sometimes. Otherwise, we may sometimes feel like we fail and we can give up too easily on our aims, and constantly feel that we are not good enough. And life is about journey rather than achieving point A or B, right?:)

      3. Absolutely!! I would move Heaven and earth for these cats. One of them we have had for 13 years and the other one we adopted when his original owner passed away, going on 2 and a half years ago. He also has asthma so needs medicine 2 times a day!

    1. Very nice to meet you! 🙂 Wow, that’s fantastic that you have Steve Taylor as a tutor. He wrote a few books – have you read any yet? What would you recommend? Oh, and if I can ask so many questions haha 😉 what modules does he teach right now?

      Yes, fantastic to find like minded people – I agree. I like bloggers community because I find some “real” people and discussions here, compared e.g. with instagram which seems to be very superficial.

      I’ve started a Personal Growth project this year. I like to read and write about positive psychology a lot and add some scientific facts to my blog posts. I’ve just posted an update on the project: https://mindset4progress.com/2018/01/21/personal-growth-project-when-things-dont-always-go-as-they-should/ not much science in it at all but this week has been hard and I felt more like adding inspirational stuff rather than numbers and data from academic studies 😉

      1. Hi 💛 I’d recommend ‘back to sanity’ and ‘waking from sleep’ I’ve also read some of his poems from ‘the calm center’ I have that book at home and dip in and out of it.

        I’ll check bloggers community. I’m pretty new on the scene so I’m still trying to find my feet and see what works for me 🙂

        Steve has given us lectures on consciousness studies and he’s teaching positive psychology next semester 💛
